From The Way of the Fearless Writer, by Beth Kempton
“May you know that the work of the fearless writer
is to see into the heart of being,
to give voice to pain,
to celebrate wonder,
and to stay aware of your connection to everything.
May you show compassion to yourself,
to other writers,
and to your readers
through the words you offer to them.
May the light of creation
brighten your own spirit,
and help you offer hope
to those in darkness.
May you continue to tell
of the remarkable and unremarkable
which make this life,
and see beauty in the ordinary
every single day.”
“Wisdom begins in wonder.”
—Socrates
I love this quote from an article I read by Kate Arceo on goodtrade.com. The article was about embracing earnestness.
“So make your art. Drink your comfort beverage and enjoy every sip. Deliver your eulogies while your loved ones are still living. Notice the bright red tulips and let them teach you what they will. Breathe in the cool morning air and think your deep thoughts and share them if you want to. Risk being a little cringe. Being earnest is being alive. It says look at us — we won’t be snuffed out. We will laugh and we will cry. We will make art and make love and make the most of what we have in spite of it all. It says I am joy, I exist, and no one and nothing can take that away from me.”

Some kidlit books I’ve loved this year:

I loved this gentle bedtime book that conveys the safety and love of a mama and baby, with gorgeous illustrations and beautiful, perfectly sparse writing.
I will be recommending this middle grade book to people of all ages. It was recommended to me by my friend and critique partner, April. It is a dual-timeline story about intergenerational friendship, loss, love, courage, empathy, and “rising to the occasion of our lives.” This is one of those books that makes you see the world differently.
“I am
a nonstop ball of energy.
Powerful and full of light.
I am a go-getter. A difference maker. A leader.”
Proud. Aspirational. Confident. Empowering. A book I want to give every child in my life and tell them, ‘you are every good thing you see in yourself.’
And adult fiction and non-fiction that I’ve loved so far in 2025:
